Buffalo Bayou Rowing Center is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that promotes leadership, teamwork, college attendance, and encourages personal growth to the youth of Houston through competitive rowing. While we are rowing-oriented, we offer and plan to offer much more.
What is Rowing?
Physically and mentally demanding, rowing builds and tests your character every practice. Within the first seconds in the boat, you learn that the only way to succeed is to rely on and trust your teammates. Coach yells "Power 20" and you pull on the oar handle as hard as you can for 20 strokes. Twelve strokes in, you think to yourself "I have nothing left!" but you find a way to hang on and pull even harder, because your team needs you. Unlike any other sport, rowing embodies teamwork, mental and physical perseverance, respect and leadership. One person in the boat doesn't win the race; the entire boat wins. The experiences and skills learned while rowing prepare you to succeed in life.
In rowing, there are no “stars,” the team succeeds or fails together. Rowing is a sport in which no participant can “hide” on the field; each rower, carries equal weight and purpose in the boat. Our rowers train multiple times per week, getting in shape, learning the sport and growing as individuals. At BBRC, we look to create more than rowers, we look to build Houston’s upcoming leaders. Leadership, teamwork, respect, tolerance, acceptance and mental perseverance are but a few of the skills our athletes will learn. Our rowers are people, not just participants- Some may need swim lessons, nutrition, tutoring, health care resources, or other services. We aim to build well-rounded rowers through partners that have the needed resources. We have built and continue to build contacts around town to ensure we can develop our rowers into tomorrow’s leaders.
BBRC is only accessible during BBRC operating hours or during scheduled appointments. We thank you for your respect. Any inquiries or requests to visit should be directed to info@RowTheBayou.org
